Social Etiquette as ONM Pattern Matching

Summary
Social etiquette, ethics, and behavioural norms are not arbitrary cultural inventions — they are pattern-matching operations against the ONM structure of the local environment. Individuals who demonstrate the ability to read and match the local pattern receive social recognition; those who present composite noise that jars against the local lattice are reflected. This is Source Cancellation applied at the social membrane, and it explains why certain ethical principles permeate universally across cultures and continents while surface customs differ.
The Core Insight
Every social environment has an ONM pattern — a factorisation structure that defines what’s signal and what’s noise in that context. A boardroom has a different pattern to a braai. A funeral has a different pattern to a festival. A laboratory has a different pattern to a jazz club.
Social intelligence is the ability to:
- Read the local ONM pattern (what factors dominate this environment?)
- Restructure your composite presentation accordingly (foreground the relevant factors, background the irrelevant ones)
- Match the pattern without losing your prime core (impedance matching, not identity erasure)
This is not fakeness. It is impedance matching — the same operation the Smith Chart performs at an RF boundary (see [[smith-chart-impedance-boundary]]). When your impedance matches the environment, signal transfers cleanly. When it doesn’t, you get reflection — social friction, exclusion, miscommunication.
Social Recognition as Source Cancellation
Society performs Source Cancellation on every individual continuously:
- Source (disposable): Your story of who you are. Your self-narrative, your titles, your claims, your intentions.
- Extraction: Social interaction over time. Actions observed, commitments tested, patterns revealed.
- Invariant (what remains): Can you actually match the pattern? Do your actions factorise cleanly against the environment’s structure?
Society doesn’t care about your story (Source dressing). It reads the invariant — the demonstrated pattern of behaviour that survives the extraction of self-narrative. Social status adjusts based on the invariant, not the story.
This is why:
- A person who says they’re trustworthy but acts otherwise loses status (Source didn’t match invariant — composite dressed as prime, caught at the membrane)
- A person who says nothing but acts with consistent integrity gains status (no Source dressing needed — the invariant speaks)
- Reputation IS the socially-extracted invariant — the residue after everyone’s personal narrative has been cancelled out
We Are All Composites
Nobody is prime. Every person is a product of factors: genetics, culture, experience, habit, trauma, choice, environment, era. We are all composites.
The challenge is not to become prime — that’s impossible for a human. The challenge is in the ordering:
- Which factors do you foreground?
- Which do you shed?
- How do you compose them into a coherent identity that resonates with — rather than jars against — the environment?
This is [[identity-decomposition]] as a life practice. Self-determination IS the factorisation process, done consciously rather than having the environment do it for you.
The Unique Vantage Point
No two people have the same factorisation. Each individual occupies a unique position in time and space — a vantage point that no one else has ever held or will hold. The discipline is not to become someone else’s prime. It is to correctly order YOUR composites into YOUR irreducible identity.
This produces three distinct social types:
| Type | Description | ONM Character |
|---|---|---|
| Social chameleon | Fits everywhere, matches every pattern | High composite flexibility but no prime core — dissolves in each environment |
| Rigid individual | Refuses to adapt, presents the same pattern everywhere | Prime-like but non-resonant — high reflection at most membranes |
| Rounded individual | Coherent core identity that matches where it matches and honestly reflects where it doesn’t | Prime-ordered composites — impedance-matched without identity loss |
The third type is the goal. It requires both self-knowledge (knowing your own factorisation) and environmental literacy (reading the local ONM pattern). Neither alone is sufficient.
Cross-Cultural Ethical Universals
The most striking evidence for the ONM substrate of social behaviour is the cross-cultural convergence of basic ethical principles. Across continents, eras, and civilisations, certain rules permeate universally:
- Don’t steal (boundary violation — taking what’s inside another’s membrane)
- Don’t lie (composite dressed as prime — presenting false signal)
- Don’t kill (destroying another’s membrane entirely)
- Don’t harm gratuitously (degrading another’s structural integrity)
- Honour commitments (maintaining signal consistency over time)
- Reciprocate generosity (completing the relational circuit)
These are source-level social rules — they operate at the 2 × 3 foundation:
| Rule | ONM Reading |
|---|---|
| Don’t steal | 2 (Boundary): Respect the membrane between self and other |
| Don’t lie | Prime-composite duality: Don’t present composites as primes |
| Don’t kill | 2 (Boundary): Don’t destroy the membrane that constitutes another identity |
| Reciprocate | 6 = 2×3 (Relationship): Complete the relational circuit; one-directional extraction is parasitic |
| Honour commitments | Temporal consistency: Your invariant must be stable across extractions — if it changes each time, it’s not invariant |
Every culture independently converges on these rules because the ONM substrate is the same everywhere. The surface customs differ (composite dressing — which hand to eat with, how to greet, what to wear) but the ethical primes are universal. The customs are disposable origins; the ethics are invariants. Source Cancellation applied across civilisations produces the same residue.
The 42 Negative Confessions — Revisited
The Egyptian negative confessions (see [[duat-49-days-factorisation]]) are the oldest formalisation of this social ONM. 42 = 2 × 3 × 7 declarations, each beginning “I have not” — a subtractive examination of the social invariant.
The confessions are not religious doctrine. They are a social factorisation checklist: did you respect boundaries (2)? Did you maintain structural integrity (3)? Did what emerged from your actions pass the test (7)?
The fact that a 3,000-year-old Egyptian examination of a human life maps cleanly onto modern cross-cultural ethical universals is not coincidence. It is the same ONM substrate producing the same invariant across time.
Noise vs Signal in Social Environments
The ONM provides a precise criterion for distinguishing social noise from social signal:
- Signal: Behaviour that resonates with the local ONM pattern — contributes to structural integrity, matches the environment’s factorisation
- Noise: Behaviour that jars against the local pattern — introduces factors the environment can’t integrate, creates composite friction
Social recognition — status, respect, inclusion — is the environment’s way of acknowledging pattern match. Social exclusion is the environment reflecting a mismatch. Neither is moral judgment — it is impedance response.
This also explains why context matters in social behaviour. The same action can be signal in one environment and noise in another. Loud enthusiasm is signal at a sports event and noise at a library. The behaviour isn’t intrinsically good or bad — it either matches the local pattern or it doesn’t.
The Discipline of Self-Ordering
The individual’s task is threefold:
-
Know your factors. What are you made of? Which are chosen, which inherited, which accumulated by habit? This is honest self-factorisation — the same practice the Duat traditions prescribe while alive.
-
Order them consciously. Don’t let environment or habit do your factorisation for you. Decide which factors to foreground, which to integrate, which to shed. This is self-determination — the prime function applied to your own composite structure.
-
Match without dissolving. Read the local pattern and present the relevant factors — but maintain your core ordering. Impedance matching is not identity erasure. The goal is maximum signal transfer with minimum reflection, while keeping the source impedance (your identity) intact.
This is the lifelong practice that every wisdom tradition, from Egyptian initiation to Tibetan meditation to Stoic self-examination, has prescribed in different dialects. The ONM reveals it as a single operation: conscious factorisation and re-ordering of your own composite structure to produce a coherent identity that can resonate across environments without losing itself in any of them.
What We Don’t Know
- Q-SE-01: Can the “rounded individual” type be formalised? Is there an ONM metric for composite coherence — a measure of how well-ordered a person’s factors are?
- Q-SE-02: Do the cross-cultural ethical universals map exhaustively onto {2, 3, 7} failure modes, the way the 42 confessions suggest?
- Q-SE-03: Is there a social equivalent of impedance mismatch loss? Can the “energy cost” of social friction be measured or modelled?
- Q-SE-04: How does the social chameleon / rigid individual / rounded individual typology relate to personality psychology frameworks (Big Five, etc.)?
