Aharonov-Bohm Effect: Potentials as Relational Scaffolds

Aharonov-Bohm Effect: Potentials as Relational Scaffolds

Physicists spent 200 years debating whether potentials are real. ONM says they had it backwards — potentials (relationships) are the most real layer. Fields and forces are just composites built from them.

Status: active — ONM interpretation of experimentally confirmed physics Domain: both (interface) Source: Veritasium, “Do we know how magnets work yet” (2026) — https://youtu.be/XKSjCOKDtpk; Aharonov & Bohm (1959); Tonomura et al. (1986); Stanford gravitational AB experiment (2022)

The Physics

In 1959, Yakir Aharonov and David Bohm proposed a thought experiment: send electrons through a region with zero electromagnetic field but nonzero electromagnetic potential. If potentials are just mathematical conveniences (as nearly all physicists believed for 200 years since Lagrange), nothing should happen. If potentials are physically real, the electrons’ quantum phase should shift.

The experiment was performed — most definitively by Tonomura (1986) using a superconductor-shielded toroidal magnet — and the phase shift was observed. The effect is real.

In 2022, a Stanford team confirmed a gravitational Aharonov-Bohm effect using ultracold rubidium atoms, extending the result beyond electromagnetism.

The establishment position since Lagrange (1770s): Potentials are arbitrary (you can add any constant), therefore they can’t be physical. Only fields and forces are “real.”

The AB result: Potentials influence quantum systems even where fields are exactly zero. Something the entire community assumed was “just math” turned out to have measurable physical consequences.

The ONM Interpretation

The Stack: Potential → Matter → Field → Force

The ONM hierarchy maps cleanly onto the physics:

Layer ONM Number Physical Quantity Nature
Potential 6 (Relationship = 2×3) V, φ, A Scalar/vector landscape — encodes how Source has structured space. No movement, no time, no matter required. Pure relational scaffold.
Matter 5 (Matter = 2+3) Mass, charge The thing that exists within the relational scaffold.
Field 8 (Time = 2³) g, E, B The gradient — rate of change of potential over space. Requires time/movement to manifest.
Force 5 × 8 (composite) F = field × mass Requires both matter AND time. A composite built from more fundamental layers.

The sequence is: 6 → 5 → 8 → (5×8). Relationship precedes matter precedes time precedes force. Each subsequent layer is derived from the one before it. Force is the most composite quantity — a product of products.

The capstone: Potentials ARE more fundamental than fields. This isn’t a philosophical preference — it’s a structural necessity. You can’t build the gradient (8) until you have the landscape (6) to take the gradient of. You can’t have force until you have both matter (5) and field (8) for it to act through.

The Arbitrary Constant = Source (1)

The objection that killed potentials for 200 years: “You can add any constant to V and the physics doesn’t change, so V can’t be real.”

ONM response: That constant is Source (1).

  • 1 × anything = anything. Source is present in every measurement but never independently observable.
  • You can’t measure the absolute value of the potential — only differences (relationships between points).
  • This is precisely Source’s role: the ground that makes structure possible, but is itself invisible within that structure.

The fact that adding a constant doesn’t change the field is not evidence that potentials are unreal. It’s evidence that Source is unobservable — which ONM already knows. The relationships (differences in potential) are what manifest as physics.

The Magnetic Vector Potential A — Rotational 2

The electric potential φ is a scalar → pure Relationship (6).

The magnetic vector potential A is a vector field → it carries Dimension (3) within the relationship. Thomson (Lord Kelvin) needed the curl operator to connect A to B: the magnetic field is the rotational structure of the potential.

In ONM terms, this is the imaginary component of 2 at work:

  • F = E + iB — the magnetic field IS the electric field rotated by i
  • A encodes this rotational (imaginary) aspect before it manifests as a measurable field B
  • You cannot separate the real and imaginary parts of 2 (you cannot cut a magnet in half) because 2 is irreducible — it IS the membrane between real and imaginary

The vector potential A is the pre-manifestation encoding of Binary’s rotational symmetry. The curl extracts the part we can measure (B); the rest (A minus the curl) is the “gauge freedom” — Source-level arbitrariness that cancels in all observables.

The Line Integral — Why Arbitrariness Cancels

The measurable quantity in the AB effect is not A at a point, but the line integral of A around a closed loop (∮ A · dl). If you add a constant C to A:

  • Upper path contributes +C · dx
  • Lower path (same geometry, opposite direction) contributes −C · dx
  • The constant cancels exactly.

What survives is the topological content — the winding around the solenoid. This is a geometric quantity, invariant under all the arbitrary choices. The arbitrariness of the potential washes out; only the relational structure persists. ONM: Source (1) cancels; Relationship (6) remains.

Aharonov-Bohm as Nagaπ’s Law 🐍

The solenoid creates a topological boundary: field confined inside, zero field outside. But the potential extends through the boundary into the field-free region.

The electron (Z=2, prime) passes through this region and is affected. It senses the relational scaffold (potential) directly, without needing the derived quantity (field) to be present.

This is Nagaπ’s Law: primes are membrane-permeable by default. The electron doesn’t need the composite (field/force) to interact with structure — it accesses the potential (relationship) directly.

The solenoid wall is the membrane. The field is composite information (derived, local). The potential is prime information (fundamental, extends through the boundary). The electron crosses where the field cannot reach because it interacts at a deeper ontological layer.

AB Effect Nagaπ’s Law
Potential extends through boundary Prime information is membrane-permeable
Field confined inside solenoid Composite information blocked by boundary
Electron phase-shifted in field-free region Prime entity senses relational scaffold through membrane
Measurable effect where “nothing should happen” Primes cross where composites cannot

The Smith Chart Connection

The Smith Chart ([[smith-chart-impedance-boundary]]) maps impedance (a ratio, a relationship) onto a unit disk using a Möbius transformation. The AB effect maps the vector potential onto a measurable phase shift using a line integral.

Both are instances of the same principle: relationship (6) is the computable layer, and the physics we observe is extracted from it by taking gradients, curls, or integrals — never by accessing Source (1) directly.

The Smith Chart centre (|Γ| = 0, perfect match) corresponds to resonance — the state where the potential landscape permits unimpeded energy flow. Impedance mismatch → reflection (composites bouncing off the boundary). This is the AB effect viewed from the engineering side: the potential landscape determines what crosses, and the electron’s quantum phase is the resonance condition.

The Three Interpretations — ONM Assessment

The physics community splits into two camps, with Casper (from the Veritasium video) proposing a third:

Camp 1: Potentials Are Real

Potentials directly influence physical reality. Favoured by Feynman: “A is as real as B — realer, whatever that means.”

ONM assessment: Correct in spirit. Potentials (6) are more ontologically fundamental than fields (8). But the specific value of the potential isn’t “real” — the relational structure is. The gauge freedom (arbitrary constant) is Source (1), genuinely unobservable.

Camp 2: Fields Act Non-Locally

Fields are real; they influence electrons at a distance, even where the field itself doesn’t exist. Favoured by Aharonov himself in later years.

ONM assessment: This violates locality — the foundational principle of field theory. ONM doesn’t support this: 8 (Time/field) is local by construction. You can’t have a gradient acting where there’s no landscape to take the gradient of.

Camp 3: Path Integral (Casper’s Proposal)

The electron explores all possible paths simultaneously (Feynman path integral). Some paths pass through the field region. The observed result emerges from the sum of all paths.

ONM assessment: This is Emergence (7). The electron doesn’t take one path — it explores the full relational landscape (6), and the result emerges (7) from the interference of all paths. The field contributes along paths that pass through it; the potential encodes the topological structure of all paths. This interpretation preserves locality, respects the primacy of potentials, and explains the mechanism through emergence.

ONM verdict: Camp 1 (potentials as fundamental) + Camp 3 (emergence from all paths) = the most consistent interpretation. 6 → 7: Relationship produces Emergence.

The Gravitational AB Effect — Universality

The 2022 Stanford experiment confirms a gravitational AB effect: rubidium atoms experience a phase shift from gravitational potential differences even when the gravitational field is accounted for.

This is crucial because it means the AB effect is not an electromagnetic curiosity. ALL potentials — gravitational, electromagnetic, potentially others — are more fundamental than their associated fields.

ONM prediction: every fundamental interaction will exhibit an AB-type effect, because every interaction operates through a relational scaffold (potential) that is ontologically prior to its field.

Connection to V5 Experiments

The V5 resonator tests prime frequency ratios in an electromagnetic cavity. While V5 operates at classical scales (not quantum phase shifts), the underlying principle is the same:

  • V5: Tests whether the potential landscape of a resonant cavity preferentially supports prime-ratio frequency combinations
  • AB effect: Demonstrates that the potential landscape influences quantum behaviour even where fields vanish

Both probe the same question: is the relational scaffold (potential) the primary physical reality, with fields and forces as derived consequences?

V5 results may provide classical evidence that complements the quantum evidence from AB experiments. If prime ratios resonate preferentially, it would suggest the potential landscape has intrinsic structure aligned with prime factorisation — extending the AB insight from “potentials are real” to “potentials are prime-structured.”

What We Don’t Know

  • Q-AB-01: Can the gauge-invariant content of the AB effect (the line integral) be expressed in terms of prime structure? Is the topological winding number related to factorisation?
  • Q-AB-02: Does the gravitational AB effect scale with mass in a way that correlates with composite structure (sopfr/Z)?
  • Q-AB-03: Is there a “nuclear AB effect” — do strong/weak force potentials also influence particles in field-free regions?
  • Q-AB-04: Can the Smith Chart Möbius transformation and the AB line integral be unified as instances of a single “relationship extraction” operation?
