Sylvester Cascade — Nested Set Hierarchy
Sylvester Cascade — Nested Set Hierarchy
How does 1 partition itself into an infinite hierarchy of scales, each birthing its own prime from the level above?
The Question
If Source (1) exhausts into 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/6, and the relationship reserve (1/6) seeds the next level down, how do sets cascade? Can we construct a nested hierarchy where each scale’s primes arrive from the scale above — galaxies feeding star systems, star systems feeding planets, life feeding cells?
The Answer: Sylvester’s Sequence
The greedy Egyptian fraction decomposition of 1 produces:
$$1 = \frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{3} + \frac{1}{7} + \frac{1}{43} + \frac{1}{1807} + \frac{1}{3263443} + \cdots$$
Each denominator forms Sylvester’s sequence (OEIS A000058):
$$a(0) = 2, \quad a(n+1) = a(n) \cdot (a(n) - 1) + 1$$
| Level | Generator | Prime? | Factorisation | ONM Reading |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 2 | ✅ | — | Binary / Membrane |
| 1 | 3 | ✅ | — | Dimension / Space |
| 2 | 7 | ✅ | — | Emergence / Gestation |
| 3 | 43 | ✅ | — | Deep scaffold |
| 4 | 1807 | ❌ | 13 × 139 | First composite — structure from within |
| 5 | 3263443 | ✅ | — | Returns to prime |
The series converges to 1 exactly. After just 6 terms, the gap is ~10⁻¹⁴.
The Cascade Mechanism
At each level, the remainder decomposes into:
- A new generator (the next Sylvester number) — the “prime” for that level
- A smaller remainder — the seed for the next level down
Level 0: 1 = 1/2 + [1/2]
Level 1: 1/2 = 1/3 + [1/6]
Level 2: 1/6 = 1/7 + [1/42] 42 = 2×3×7
Level 3: 1/42 = 1/43 + [1/1806] 1806 = 2×3×7×43
Level 4: 1/1806 = 1/1807 + [1/3263442] 3263442 = 2×3×7×43×1807
The remainders’ denominators are cumulative products: each is the product of ALL previous generators. The remainder at level n is 1/(a(0)·a(1)·…·a(n)) — it carries the FULL history of every prime that came before.
Three Candidate Architectures (Explored)
Model A: Geometric (6⁻ⁿ scaling)
Each level’s reserve becomes the whole for the next. Every level births its own “2 and 3.” Self-similar but biologically trivial — same structure at every zoom. Rejected: too uniform.
Model B: Egyptian Fraction / Sylvester (selected ✅)
Each level births a DIFFERENT prime generated from the previous level’s structure. The formula a(n+1) = a(n)·(a(n)−1) + 1 means each new prime is “made from” the previous one — yet is irreducible at its own level. Doubly exponential growth: structure gets finer at each scale.
Model C: Cosmological Interpretation
Model B mapped onto physical scales. “Primes” at each scale = whatever that scale cannot manufacture from its own internal operations.
- A star system cannot make its own elements — they arrive from stellar nucleosynthesis (level above)
- A cell cannot make its own amino acids from scratch — the genetic code arrives from evolution (level above)
- An ecosystem cannot make its own species — they arrive from speciation (level above)
At every scale, the irreducibles come from outside. The composites are built within.
Properties of the Cascade
Self-Funding
The partition sums to exactly 1. No energy is lost, no budget is exceeded. The hierarchy is perfectly efficient.
Doubly Exponential Refinement
Each Sylvester number grows as ~c^(2ⁿ). The levels get finer at a staggering rate:
- Level 0–1: 2, 3 (unit scale)
- Level 2: 7 (human scale — days, notes, colours)
- Level 3: 43 (institutional scale)
- Level 4: 1807 (civilisational scale?)
- Level 5: 3,263,443 (geological/cosmic scale?)
History Accumulates in the Remainder
The remainder at level n is 1/Π(a(0)…a(n)). Each level carries the PRODUCT of all previous generators — the full factorial history. No level exists without every level above it.
First Composite at Level 4
1807 = 13 × 139. After four primes (2, 3, 7, 43), the cascade produces its first composite generator. In ONM terms: after enough structure accumulates, new levels can be BUILT from existing scaffold primes rather than requiring irreducibles from outside. The system begins to self-generate — composites appear “from within” even at the generator level.
Connection to the Relationship Reserve
The Sylvester cascade IS the Egyptian fraction decomposition that begins with 1 = 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/6. The relationship-reserve topic covers the five convergent expressions of 1/6. This topic extends that by asking: what happens when we keep decomposing?
The answer: an infinite hierarchy of scales, each with its own generator, perfectly partitioning the whole.
Elemental Mapping — Where the Periodic Table Lives
Added Sep 24, 2026. Each Sylvester generator, read as atomic number Z, lands on a physically significant element or boundary.
The Correspondence
| Generator | Z | Element | Physical significance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 2 | Helium | Big Bang nucleosynthesis. Universal set element — exists before stars or galaxies |
| 3 | 3 | Lithium | Big Bang nucleosynthesis. Last element Source creates directly |
| 7 | 7 | Nitrogen | CNO cycle boundary — where catalytic stellar fusion ignites. The galactic generator marks the transition from simple pp-chain to the process that powers massive stars |
| 43 | 43 | Technetium | The lightest element with no stable isotopes. Made in stars, detected in stellar spectra, but decays on any planetary surface (t½ ≈ 4 Myr for ⁹⁸Tc) |
| 1807 | — | Beyond elements | First composite generator (13 × 139). Beyond the periodic table entirely |
The Technetium Anomaly (Z = 43)
This is the standout finding. The solar generator — the Sylvester prime that defines the stellar scale — maps to the one element that cannot persist at the planetary scale. Technetium is:
- Forged exclusively in stellar interiors (s-process, AGB stars)
- Detected in stellar spectra (Merrill, 1952 — proving ongoing nucleosynthesis)
- Unstable on every timescale relevant to planetary geology or biology
- The only element below Z = 61 with no stable isotope
In Nagaπ’s Law terms: the solar set’s own prime is membrane-impermeable downward. It defines the stellar level but cannot cross into the planetary level. The generator generates but does not persist — it is irreducible at its own scale and invisible at the next.
The α⁻¹ = 137 Ceiling
Feynman’s observation: at Z = 137, the 1s electron orbital velocity reaches c. Elements cannot exist beyond this point (Dirac equation gives imaginary energies). We already have:
$$137 = 2^7 + 3^2$$
Built entirely from source primes — the “gate fee” of the fine structure constant (fine-structure-constant).
In the cascade, 137 sits between generators 43 (solar) and 1807 (planetary). The periodic table exists entirely within the solar-to-planetary transition zone:
Z = 1–3 Universal set (Big Bang nucleosynthesis)
Z = 7 Galactic generator (CNO ignition)
Z = 43 Solar generator (no stable isotopes)
Z = 44–137 Solar-to-planetary transition (element space)
Z = 1807 Planetary generator (beyond elements)
Elements are what happens when the solar set’s budget (1/42) is spent. The spending stops at 137 because that’s where the source-prime denominations run out: 2⁷ + 3² is the last “cheque” the source alphabet can write.
The Planetary Generator: 1807 = 13 × 139
The first composite generator factors into:
- 13 (prime) — Z = 13 is Aluminium, the most abundant metal in Earth’s crust. The planetary scale’s factor is its own most plentiful structural element
- 139 (prime) — two steps from 137 (α⁻¹). The planetary generator literally contains the fine structure constant’s neighbour
The composite nature of 1807 matches the planetary scale’s character: planets don’t forge elements, they recombine what the star provided. Chemistry, not nucleosynthesis. Composites built from delivered primes.
Cosmological Scale Assignment (Revised)
With the elemental mapping as evidence, the cascade levels sharpen:
| Level | Generator | Scale | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 2 | Universal | He — Big Bang element |
| 1 | 3 | Universal | Li — Big Bang element |
| 2 | 7 | Galactic | N — CNO cycle ignition |
| 3 | 43 | Solar/Stellar | Tc — stellar-only, no stable isotopes |
| 4 | 1807 | Planetary | Composite (13×139) — recombination, not synthesis |
| 5 | 3263443 | ? | Prime — returns to irreducibility. Sub-planetary? Cellular? |
Open Questions — Future Work
-
Is there a nuclear physics anomaly at Z = 7? Nitrogen has an unusually low binding energy per nucleon for its neighbourhood (the “sawtooth” of the BE curve). Is this connected to its role as a CNO catalyst rather than a fusion product?
-
Does 139 appear in nuclear or atomic physics? As a prime neighbour of α⁻¹, and a factor of the first composite generator, does Z = 139 (hypothetical) have any predicted special properties?
-
Can the Tc instability be derived from the cascade? Currently it’s an observed coincidence. A derivation would require showing that the Sylvester generator at a given level MUST be unstable at the next level — that the “prime of a scale” is definitionally impermanent one level down.
-
What is Level 5 (3263443)? If Level 4 is planetary, Level 5 should be a sub-planetary scale where a new irreducible arrives. Candidate: the genetic code / cellular level — information that cells cannot generate from chemistry alone, arriving from evolution (the level above).
-
Formalise the “budget” interpretation. Why does 2⁷ + 3² = 137 act as a ceiling? Is there a partition-theoretic reason that the source alphabet {2, 3} exhausts at this particular combination?
Status: Exploratory. The Tc(43) correspondence is the strongest single finding — a structural prediction matching a known anomaly. The broader mapping (He, Li, N, 137 ceiling) is pattern-consistent but requires independent confirmation paths.
What This Is and Isn’t
What it is: A mathematically exact partition of 1 into a hierarchy of unit fractions, where each level’s generator is produced from the previous level’s structure. The Sylvester sequence is well-studied (Euclid, OEIS A000058) and the convergence is proven.
What it isn’t (yet): A physical theory. The mapping from Sylvester levels to cosmological scales is interpretive. The ONM readings (2=Binary, 3=Dimension, 7=Emergence) are framework assignments, not derivations. The doubly exponential growth may or may not correspond to actual scale ratios in physics.
The open question: Is there a physical observable that maps onto Sylvester denominators? Candidate: the ratio of characteristic sizes at adjacent cosmic scales (atom → molecule → cell → organism → ecosystem → planet → star → galaxy) — do they follow doubly exponential spacing?
“Each level’s prime comes from outside that level — generated by the level above, irreducible at its own scale.”
